THE PHOTO STUDIO OF AN ARCHITECT | ISTANBUL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
A lesser-known trove from one of Turkey’s pioneering architects, Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, emerges into the light at the latest exhibition of Istanbul Research Institute, titled The Photo Studio of an Adventurous Architect. In the 1920s and ’30s, Koyunoğlu roamed Istanbul, Bursa, and Edirne, capturing images that straddle two eras: Ottoman legacies and the early stirrings of Republican modernity. These photographs are more than mere architectural documents —they are vivid chronicles of everyday life and the subtle metamorphoses of entire cities.
